Nursery Online - Latest News
Shall I just copy that?

A lovely review of your product appears in the media. So naturally you copy it, send it to your colleagues and post an image on your website! Wrong! Did you know you're not allowed to do that? At least, not until and unless you pay a hefty fee to the NLA.

As a writer, I can understand that copying someone's work and profiting by it is morally if not legally wrong, but can this be taken too far? After all, in a review of a product, the likelihood is that you have not only supplied the product, you probably hold the copyright on the image as well.

But lines have to be drawn somewhere, even if in this case it feels to be a little harsh. Let's face it, if you put this on your website, the bottom line is really that you believe that you will increase the sales of your product. So yes, you are profiting from someone else's work!

That's the case for the prosecution, what about the defense?

The argument against this is the fees you are required to pay feels over the top for the occasional copy – I calculate it to be around £360pa for a small company which only does occasional copying and another £175 to post a single item on your website! And note. You can’t keep anything more than a year- so no archiving!

So, in reality, it means DON’T COPY unless you have the permission of the copyright holder!

‘Global Recycling Day’ springboards JMDA’s new car seat recycling scheme

This year’s ‘Global Recycling Day’ on 18th March saw a huge leap forward in JMDA Design’s mission to raise awareness of reducing the impact of child car seats on landfill sites worldwide.

With help from EMR, one of the world’s leading metal and plastics recyclers, 30 car seats were crushed in cars for recycling. The metals were separated for reuse and the plastics were sent to EMR’s plastics division, MBA Polymers, to create plastic pellets that can be used in the production process.

JMDA design is a leading global design company specialising in the design of children’s car safety seats. It is estimated that around 250,000 children’s car seats reach their end of life every year in the UK and over 90% of these are sent to landfill. JMDA announced in July 2018 their commitment to reduce the number of units entering landfill.

To mark ‘Global Recycling Day 2019’, JMDA teamed up with metal and plastics recycling experts EMR, to help progress the next phase of their initiative. The trial to recycle over 30 car seats took place at EMR’s facility in Birmingham. The used child car seats, which were provided by Diono, Cosatto, Team Tex and Hauck, were placed into end-of-life vehicles which were put through their industrial shredder and separated out into different recyclable components. The dismantling of this many car seats manually would take days but was completed in a matter of seconds by the team at EMR and their specialist equipment.

Derrick Barker, Creative and Managing Director at JMDA Design explains “We were delighted to support Global Recycling Day this year especially as our car seat recycling initiative gathers momentum. We are all becoming more aware of the need to reduce waste and commit to safeguarding the future of our planet. The car seat industry comes with its own set of challenges…. firstly, car seats can’t be resold due to the potential risk of their structure being compromised, and secondly, dismantling car seats for recycling can be labour intensive due to the mix of materials and complex structures. A single car seat consists of different types of plastics, metals, foams, harness webbing and fabrics, which is the reason why most car seats end their life in landfill sites”. Derrick adds, “We’re thrilled to be working with EMR and their plastics division, MBA Polymers, who orchestrated this trial using scrap cars and then filling them with car seats before they entered the company’s shredder. We were astounded by the speed and the precision in which the car seats were separated into materials, recovered and recycled.”

EMR’s Marketing and Communications Director, Gareth Williams said: “As a global leader in metal recycling, we recognise the importance of recycling as our natural resources won’t last forever and landfilling is unsustainable. We can recycle everything from a toaster to an aircraft carrier and have invested heavily in developing our own technologies in our quest to be the global leader in the provision of sustainable materials.” He adds, “We were shocked to hear that over 90% of children’s car seats in the UK are sent to landfill. We want to join forces with organisations like JMDA, to help reduce the number of recyclable products entering landfill sites.”

JMDA Design with their Headquarters in Pershore, Worcestershire and teams in China and Italy, have over 27 years’ experience in designing children’s car seats. Winning coveted awards such as a Gold International Design Award (IDA) and a Red Dot Award for Design Concept to name just a few, expresses their dedication and the company’s continued focus on the child restraint industry in all aspects. JMDA is committed to helping to reduce the environmental impact the industry has on the planet and aims to significantly reduce the amount of CRS material entering landfill by 2025.

WHL Europe delighted to announce Purflo and Pink Lining win multiple industry accolades across the board

Purflo’s Keep Me Close Bedside Crib won not one, not two but three key Industry Awards for 2018/2019 proving that it is the market leader and must-have sleep solution for babies and parents.

Winning Gold in the 2019 Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category in the Mother & Baby Awards, Gold in the Junior Design Awards, Platinum in Loved by Parents award and Bronze in the Mumii Best Baby and Toddler Awards, has got 2019 off to a golden start for the team at WHL Europe (owners of purflo, Pink Lining and Koo-di)

In the words of Emma Bailey, Editor of Mother & Baby magazine 2018: “Mums felt this product was sturdy, well made, and a very robust crib that they could trust. We heard all about how it enabled them to safely stay so, so close to their babies at night. But what elevated this crib onto the winner’s podium was its breathability – and how that reassured mums that their babies were sleeping safely, so they could sleep, too. Winning the gold award with a dream of a product, it’s the Keep Me Close Breathable Bedside Crib from Purflo.”

Purflo’s breathable Bedside Crib is the only bedside crib to include a fully air permeable and machine washable purflo mattress. In fact, all fabrics are removable, breathable and washable for hygiene, and peace-of-mind. The Keep Me Close attaches easily to your bed using a drop side rail connection system and six-height adjuster to create the perfect height. The incline option raises one end to help ease congestion if baby has a cold or reflux. Purflo’s trademark breathable mesh sides help keep an eye on baby at all times during sleep, and in combination with the breathable mattress, reduce the chances of baby overheating.

The Keep Me Close Breathable Bedside Crib fully complies to BS4578:1970 (the UK standard for Breathability) and BS EN1130 which makes it a clever and safe choice.

With anticipation building for the arrival of the next royal baby, expectant parents across the UK are already taking guesses on which children’s brands will be favoured by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

One of the most important decisions made by parents ahead of the birth of their little one, is which car seat they choose to use. New and expectant parents can have peace of mind thanks to Britax Römer’s latest infant carrier, the BABY-SAFE² i-SIZE; which offers safety without compromise for growing babies, accompanying them from birth up to approximately 15 months.

The infant carrier has a newborn insert for extra support, also offering energy absorption in case of an impact. The BABY-SAFE² i-SIZE in combination with the BABY-SAFE i-SIZE BASE and BABY-SAFE i-SIZE FLEX BASE has been tested by ADAC (ADAC Online 10/2018) with a rating of “GOOD” and a grade of 1.7.

JMDA hold quiz in support of RoSPA’s Family Safety Week

JMDA Design who have made RoSPA their chosen charity for 2019 are supporting Family Safety Week this week with a fun, yet challenging home safety quiz to test their knowledge of road safety and common hazards around the home.

Helping to promote safety and health awareness, JMDA’s Marketing team put together a series of safety related multiple choice questions designed to test the team’s knowledge of safety on both the roads and in and around the home. Held at JMDA’s HQ during lunchtime on Thursday, groups of three donated money to enter a team into the quiz and eagerly answered a series of questions designed to test their knowledge of common hazards found around the home and challenges for road users.

Christina Darling, Marketing Manager at JMDA explains, “This year, JMDA are dedicated to raising as much money as they can for RoSPA and their innovative Keeping Kids Safe Packs. These packs are given out to disadvantaged parents/parents-to-be and carers of babies or children under-five, as part of RoSPA’s Brighter Beginnings Appeal.” She adds, “By holding enjoyable fundraising events such as this RoSPA Family Safety Week Quiz, the team demonstrated their support of the charity, whilst raising vital funds at the same time. The Quiz generated a great, competitive atmosphere. The questions promoted discussion and, in some instances, really divided opinion; it was really good fun!”

Providing a number of useful resources, including posters, leaflets, pedestrian training and fun hazard games for children, RoSPA aims to help parents and teachers to start safety conversations of varying depths, during Family Safety Week held 1st-5th April 2019. JMDA helped to spread awareness of RoSPA’s efforts by sharing their hints, tips and interesting statistics across social media during the week.

Besides continuing to collect their loose copper change, a number of brave members of the JMDA team have agreed to test their courage, strength and endurance by taking part in a Wolf Run obstacle course in June. Being held at Stanford Hall in Leicestershire, the course offers a wide range of challenging terrain, vast woodland and stunning scenery. JMDA’s courageous participants will be asked to fundraise prior to the event and all proceeds will go directly to RoSPA to help fund their life saving Keeping Kids Safe Packs.

Besides being industry leaders in the advanced design of Child Restraint Systems (CRS) and nursery products designed to keep children and babies safe, the team at JMDA are also highly experienced in the design of consumer products designed for safety and security such as stair lifts, first aid kits, door entry systems and fire alarms.

For more information about JMDA Design and their support of RoSPA and their Family Safety Week this year, please call 01386 426100, or email marketing@jmda.co.uk
